Happy days

As you can probably see if you have ever been to this page before, I am working on a new design for tagsko.com

This is to reflect the fact that I don't do so much web design any more (I simply don't have the time right now, I will start taking on some projects after xmas if I get the time then).

My idea is to move most of previous projects into one page (such as leruffiant.co.uk, musictechnology.wordpress.com and the old tagsko.com (webdesign) ) to make a portfolio / archive of the research and projects I have been involved in over the last 10 years. I also want a more flexible platform to talk about what I am doing now - which is aimed more towards innovation and entrepreneurial business development.

Currently undertaking a Master's in Business Creation and Entrepreneurship in the north of Norway I will still take on projects for TagSko Productions, but on a smaller scale than I have done the last couple of years.

This is something you will most likely come across if you make your own drupal theme or start a theme from scratch. Cross browser compatibility is something every designer / developer (unfortunately) have to consider.

This is mostly because of the way Internet Explorer handles CSS stylesheets. Given that IE has a 67.51% market share compared to Mozilla Firefox (21.73%), Safari (8.00%), Google Chrome (1.15%), Opera (0.71%) and 'Other' (0.90%) (Source: Net Applications) this is a given. Your page might render beautifully on all the browsers above except from Internet Explorer, which is a pain - but is unfortunately we all have to live with. So how do you set up your drupal site to tackle this? First of all you will need to get your hands dirty and edit your page.tpl.php file.

Insert this code just below your title tag:

@import "<?php print base_path() . path_to_theme() ?>/fix-ie-6.css";

@import "<?php print base_path() . path_to_theme() ?>/fix-ie-7.css";

And then make two files in your theme folder called fix-ie-6.css and fix-ie-7.css and start tweaking away on the styles that are different in those two browsers. Of course if you see the need to add another stylesheet for IE 8 do the same again for that browser.

Another tool I find indispensable in this process is http://browsershots.org/ (but of course the best thing is to have a PC handy).

Good luck!

In 2006 I was finsihing my Bachelor Degree in Creative Music Technology and we all had to do a "Major Creative Project". I decided to make a Flash website with interactive elements and three music videos which I all animated by hand and took in to Final Cut Pro and painstakingly synched with three of my tracks Drak, Kard and Rakd (all anagrams of 'Dark'). For those who don't know I have also been making music under the name 'Le Ruffiant' since 2003. Since last year, when I finished my Master's degree in Music Technology I haven't made much new stuff but I am planning to get busy again soon if I find time for it. I hope you enjoy these three videos!

So Apple released their new laptops yesterday. They all look great and I like everyone else that loves Mac would love to get their hands on one of their new slick laptops or the cinema display.

What really pisses me off though is that;

- The Apple LED Cinema Display is retailing at $899 in the U.S, £649 in the U.K. Come on Apple, that's a bit unjustified - as £649 is the equivalent of $1.137!

- The MacBook Pro: $2.499 in the U.S, £1.749 in the U.K which is the equivalent of $3.068 when it really should have been £1.424 with the current conversion rate. Hell maybe it should even be cheaper as the length of freight is a bit shorter!

That's a couple of minus points from me on the new Apple gear, but hey maybe I'll screw them over and get someone in the states to buy it for me and bring it over

Ok so this is last weeks news but I went to FOWA (The Future of Web Apps) in London's ExCel center in London last Thursday and Friday.

I'm new to the conference scene (well at least conferences of interest) and I must say I feel quite inspired after going to lots of interesting talks.

For example, I founds Tim Bray's speech about the doom and gloom scenaro spreading to New Media very interesting.

The guy behind LOL cats was really inspirational. Ben Huh is the Chief Cheezburger (A.K.A. CEO) he bougth the icanhascheezburger.com domain not too long ago and it has grown very big very quickly. They have now buildt their portfolio (him and a group of investors) to none less than 8 domains - generating 2 million page views a day -- all driven by community contributions. The I Can Has Cheezburger? Network includes failblog.org, ihasahotdog.com, graphjam.com and punditkitchen.com. ICHC plans on continuing to grow its network of sites.

Jason McCabe Calacanis is the founder and CEO of Mahalo.com, a human-powered search engine. Prior to Mahalo.com's launch in May, 2007, he was an "Entrepreneur in Action" at Sequoia Capital, a position he held since December 2006. Jason co-founded and was the CEO of Weblogs, Inc., a network of popular weblogs that was sold to AOL in November 2005. Upon joining AOL, he was appointed senior vice president. In addition, he was named general manager of AOL's Netscape. Prior to forming Weblogs Inc., Jason was the founder of Rising Tide Studios, which sold its flagship publication to Dow Jones. He had some wise words of wisdom which pretty much boiled down to "work your ass off and get the fruits of your labour later" which I kind of agree with.

I thought Facebook's Mark Zucherberg sucked (pardon the pun) - he dodged questions and didn't come accross as very enlightened about his own business.

All of the talks from FOWA is available as Webcasts on their Video Page

I also 'discovered' Twitter (I have semi-used twitter for a few years), but now I 'get-it', especially after downloading Twitteriffic for the iPhone and Spaz for my Mac.

Friendfeed was another discovery which cumninates all social web 2.0 feeds into one stream (Facebook, Youtube, Digg, Twitter etc...) and is a great addition to the social sharing hemisphere.

Diggnation was also spot on - really fun to see the community that has been built up and all in all I think the future is looking bright for the future of web apps with more events like this!

Session 4 in the series - playing with shadows!

If you're a new visitor you might want to check out Video 3, Video 2 or Video 1 in this project.

Video 3 in the series - this time with flowing ink! Nice!

Me and my friend Zai Tang had another session yesterday / this morning where we continued where we left off in Session 1.

This time we knew more what we wanted to explore. We wanted to use clusters of shapes - and this time we snapped the shots out on Zai's windowsill. This meant that the underlay was white and there was also a changing background as there was leaves in the upper part of the frame which you can see in the middle of the animation. All the white was removed using keying in Final Cut Pro and the sequence seen is based on just one of the shapes with different varations.

We estimate that we are going to have two more of these sessions before we start the music, so stay tuned for more developments in the next few coming weeks!
